Parents supporting coping skills at home

For Parents

Structured SEL language you can use alongside counseling goals

What parents can do (even with limited time)

The most helpful support is consistency: a small set of phrases, practiced often. When kids feel overwhelmed, they need a simple script that helps them pause and choose.

Try a “pause + plan” script

  • Name it: “What are you feeling?”
  • Body check: “Where do you feel it?”
  • Choose one: “Breathe, ask for help, take space, or try again?”
  • Reflect later: “What helped most?”

Why stories help

Story-based discussion can make it safer for kids to explore feelings and choices. Instead of starting with “Why did you do that?”, families can practice with a character first — then transfer the language to real life.
